Renewing Your RBT in 2026? Here Is Exactly What Changes and What to Do
Updated October 2026. Everything here comes from the BACB’s RBT Handbook (updated June 2026), the RBT 2026 Requirements document, and the official RBT Recertification Competency Assessment packet.
RBT renewal is changing more in 2026 than at any time since the credential began. The yearly renewal is ending, PDUs are coming in, and the skills check you are used to is about to go away.
This guide shows what to do in 2026, 2027, and 2028, how the renewal competency assessment works, what it costs, and how PDUs work.
Quick answer
For RBT renewal in 2026, you recertify one last time the old way: complete the 20-task Recertification Competency Assessment within 45 days of your expiration date, submit the application, and pay $50. Your 2-year cycle then starts. There is no renewal in 2027, and from 2028 you renew with 12 PDUs instead of a competency assessment.
RBT Renewal in 2026: What Is Changing?
Until the end of 2026, RBT certification is renewed every year, usually on the anniversary of the date you passed the exam. The BACB is moving all RBTs to a 2-year cycle with professional development.

| When | What you do | Competency assessment? |
|---|---|---|
| Your 2026 date | Recertify with the current requirements one last time and pay the 2026 fee. Your 2-year cycle starts. | Yes |
| 2027 | No recertification needed. Keep up supervision and start earning PDUs. | No |
| 2028 and after | Renew every 2 years with 12 PDUs and an application. | No |
Your next date after 2026 is exactly 2 years from your 2026 recertification date, as the BACB’s RBT 2026 Requirements explains. You can see your expiration date in your BACB account and on the Certificant Registry.
The RBT Renewal Competency Assessment (2026)
Most searches about RBT renewal are really about this step. Officially it is called the RBT Recertification Competency Assessment, and 2026 is the last year current RBTs need it for renewal. It is different from the 19-task initial RBT competency assessment you completed before your exam.
| Task group | Tasks | How it can be shown |
|---|---|---|
| Measurement | 1 to 3 | Tasks 1 and 2: client, role-play, or interview. Task 3: with a client |
| Assessment | 4 to 5 | With a client or role-play |
| Skill Acquisition and Behavior Reduction | 6 to 15 | With a client or role-play, but 3 of these 10 must be with a client |
| Professionalism and Requirements | 16 to 20 | Task 16: with a client. Tasks 17 to 20: interview |
- All 20 tasks must be completed on the official BACB form. Incomplete or non-BACB forms are not accepted.
- Timing: no more than 45 days before your expiration date.
- Responsible assessor: a BCBA or BCaBA who has completed the 8-hour supervision training. Assistant assessors can help, but the responsible assessor signs.
- No conflicts: the assessor cannot be your relative, your subordinate, or your employee.
- Format: one or more sessions, in person, live online, or by videos recorded for the assessment.
- Retakes: if you do not show a task correctly, your assessor can give feedback and retest you on another day.
Download the official RBT Recertification Competency Assessment packet to see every task. In our opinion, the tasks most RBTs need to brush up on are the measurement ones, so review our data collection and graphing guide before your assessment.
How to Renew Your RBT Certification Step by Step
- Check your expiration date in your BACB account.
- Schedule your competency assessment so it falls within 45 days of that date.
- Start the RBT Recertification Application up to 45 days before expiration, in your existing account. A new account cannot be used.
- Upload the completed assessment and say honestly whether you met the supervision requirements.
- Answer the disclosure questions. A “yes” needs an Ethics Self-Reporting Statement and puts the application on hold for review.
- Pay the $50 fee and agree to the processing agreement.
- Watch your email. Processing takes about 2 weeks, and notices go to your portal email.
Name check: the name on your documents must match the name in your BACB account. If it changed, add your former name with Update Profile before you apply.
RBT Renewal Fees and Deadlines
| Item | Amount or time |

| Application window | Up to 45 days before expiration |
| BACB processing time | About 2 weeks |
| Reinstatement period after expiration | 30 days |
| Appeal a rejected application | Within 30 days |
| Voluntary inactive status | $25 to request, $25 to return |
BACB fees are nonrefundable, paid in US dollars, and deadlines use US Mountain Time. Always confirm current fees in the official RBT Handbook.
RBT PDUs: The 12-Unit Rule for Your Next Cycle
Starting with the 2-year cycle, you must earn 12 PDUs (professional development units) per cycle. A new tab in your BACB account is used to upload them.

- Counts: in-service training at your organization taught by a BCaBA, BCBA, or BCBA-D (not training on a specific client’s program), events from BACB Authorized Continuing Education (ACE) Providers, and behavior-analytic university courses with a C or higher (or a pass).
- Does not count: ongoing RBT supervision, client-specific training, fieldwork toward BCaBA or BCBA, and repeating the same activity.
- Good topics: content that builds on the 40-hour training, the RBT Ethics Code, BACB requirements, or skills like working with supervisors and managing stress.
- Timing: PDUs must happen inside the cycle. For a September 30, 2026 recertification, only PDUs from October 1, 2026 to September 30, 2028 count.
- Proof: use the RBT Professional Development form for organization and ACE events, and syllabi plus transcripts for university courses. Upload as soon as you have the documents.
In our opinion, the easiest plan is to earn about 6 PDUs per year so you are never rushing before your 2028 date.
What If Your RBT Certification Expires?
- It becomes inactive. You cannot practice, bill, or call yourself an RBT.
- You get 30 days. Submit an approvable application and pay the $50 late fee to reinstate.
- After 30 days, it expires. You must meet the eligibility rules in effect then, reapply, and retake the RBT exam.
- Missed PDUs cannot be made up, even during the 30-day reinstatement period.
If you ever have to retake the exam, our full-length RBT practice exam and the RBT task list breakdown are the fastest way back in.
Taking a Break: Voluntary Inactive Status
If you will stop providing services for a while, the handbook suggests voluntary inactive status instead of letting your certification lapse.
- You can stay inactive for up to 2 years. It costs $25 to request and $25 to return.
- While inactive, you cannot use your RBT certification at all.
- To return, complete the competency assessment no more than 45 days before reactivating. From January 1, 2027, this form is called the RBT Reentry Competency Assessment, with the same content.
- If you go inactive before your 2026 recertification, you return under the old yearly rules once, then move to the 2-year cycle. If you go inactive after it, you return under the 2026 rules, including 12 PDUs.
Supervision and Ethics Still Count at Renewal
Your renewal application asks whether you met the monthly supervision rules, so read our guide to RBT supervision requirements. You also answer disclosure questions tied to the RBT Ethics Code, which requires self-reporting certain events within 30 days.
