RBT Competency Assessment: All 19 Tasks Explained (2026)

Last updated: October 2026 · Checked against the BACB 2026 RBT Initial Competency Assessment packet

The RBT competency assessment is the hands-on check you pass before you can apply for the RBT exam. It is not a written test. A BCBA or BCaBA watches you do 19 real tasks, like taking data, prompting, and writing session notes, and signs off once you can do each one well. This guide walks you through all 19 tasks, how each one is checked, and how to know you are ready.

Quick answer

The RBT competency assessment has 19 tasks. A BCBA or BCaBA checks them with a client, by role-play, or by interview. You take it after your 40-hour training, and it must be done no more than 90 days before you apply to the BACB.

Where the Competency Assessment Fits in Your RBT Steps

Many people mix up the order. Here is how it works:

140-hour training
2Competency assessmentYou are here
3Apply to the BACBWithin 90 days
4Book and pass the exam

The BACB Initial Competency Assessment packet says the assessment must be finished after your 40-hour training, and no more than 90 days before you submit your application. If you wait longer than 90 days, it no longer counts. So plan your application date before you book your assessment.

All 19 RBT Competency Assessment Tasks

The tasks are split into four sections. The colored tags show how each task can be checked. If one section feels weak, use the practice link next to it.

ClientRole-play

Professionalism (Tasks 15–19)

Practice: Ethics quiz →

Tasks 16–19 are checked by interview only, so you need to explain them out loud.

15
Session notesWrite objective notes that describe only what happened.
ClientRole-playInterview
16
Client dignityGive examples of how you protect a client’s dignity.
Interview
17
Professional boundariesGive examples of keeping professional boundaries.
Interview
18
Supervision requirementsDescribe the BACB supervision rules for RBTs.
Interview
19
Seeking clinical directionDescribe a time you would ask your supervisor for direction.
Interview

Two details most guides skip. First, for task 14 you only show one of the three options, so pick the one you have practiced most. Second, tasks 16 to 19 can only be done by interview, which means you need to explain them clearly in your own words, not just do them.

Client, Role-Play, or Interview: How Each Task Is Checked

With a client

You do the task in a real session while the assessor watches. At least 3 of the skill and behavior tasks (6–14) must be done this way.

Role-play

The assessor or a coworker plays the learner. Treat it like a real session: give clear instructions, prompt, reinforce, and take data.

Interview

You explain a concept and give an example, live in person or online. Tasks 16–19 can only be done this way.

The assessment can happen in person, live over the internet, or through videos recorded specifically for the assessment. That helps if your assessor is not at your site.

The 4 Interview Tasks: What Your Assessor Wants to Hear

Interview tasks catch a lot of candidates off guard, because you cannot rely on muscle memory. A strong answer is short, specific, and includes a real example.

  • Task 16, client dignity: show you protect privacy and respect. Example: “I give instructions quietly instead of across the room, I knock before entering, and I never talk about a client’s behavior in front of other families.”
  • Task 17, professional boundaries: show where the line is. Example: “I don’t add families on personal social media, I don’t babysit for clients, and I check with my supervisor before accepting any gift.”
  • Task 18, supervision requirements: know the basics of how often you are supervised and who can supervise you. Review the supervision section of the RBT Handbook before your interview so your answer matches the current rules.
  • Task 19, seeking clinical direction: describe a real situation. Example: “If a client’s problem behavior gets worse, or a family asks me to change the plan, I keep following the plan as written and tell my supervisor right away.”

What Happens If You Don’t Pass a Task

This is the part that calms most people down. There is no single pass or fail moment. According to the BACB packet, if you do not show competence on a task, your assessor gives you feedback and checks that task again on another day. This repeats until you can do it. So treat the RBT competency assessment as coaching, not as a one-shot test.

Common Mistakes Candidates Make

  • Mixing up interval methods. Partial interval means the behavior happened at any point in the interval. Whole interval means it lasted the whole interval. Momentary time sampling only checks the exact moment the interval ends.
  • Forgetting to fade prompts. Giving a prompt is only half of task 11. Assessors want to see you plan how the learner will do it without help.
  • Writing opinions in session notes. “The client was angry” is an opinion. “The client threw the pencil 3 times and said no” is objective, and that is what task 15 checks.
  • Treating role-play as pretend. Take real data, give real reinforcement, and talk the way you would in a session.
  • Booking the assessment too early. If more than 90 days pass before you apply, you will need to redo it.

Questions Candidates Often Ask

Do I have to find my own assessor? Often, yes. Many people get assessed through their employer or the company that ran their 40-hour training, but this varies. The responsible assessor must be a BCBA or BCaBA who has completed the 8-hour supervision training.

Can an RBT help assess me? Yes, as an assistant assessor. From 2026, an assistant assessor must hold an active RBT certification or higher, and the responsible assessor still signs off.

Can I use a competency checklist I found online? Use it to practice only. The BACB states that non-BACB forms are not accepted, so your assessor must use the official form.
