Is the RBT Exam Hard? What the Real Pass Rates Say (and How to Be in the 75%)

Updated October 2026. Pass rates come from the BACB Annual Data Report, and exam rules come from the RBT Handbook (updated June 2026). Anything marked “in our opinion” is our view, not a BACB rule.

If you are asking how hard the RBT exam is, you probably want an honest answer, not “it depends.” So here it is, backed by the BACB’s own numbers.

Quick answer

So, how hard is the RBT exam? It is moderately hard. In 2025, 75% of first-time candidates passed, but only 38% of retake candidates did. You get 85 questions in 90 minutes, and the result is simply pass or fail. In our opinion, most people who fail knew the terms but struggled to apply them to scenarios.

RBT Exam Pass Rates: 2023 to 2025

The BACB publishes yearly pass rates in its Annual Data Report. Here are the three most recent years.

RBT exam pass rates from 2023 to 2025 for first-time and retake candidates
YearFirst-time candidatesRetake candidates
202575%38%
202473%36%
202374%41%

These numbers show how hard the RBT exam really is. Two things stand out. First, about 1 in 4 first-time candidates does not pass. Second, retakers pass at roughly half the rate of first-timers. In our opinion, that gap is the strongest reason to take your first attempt seriously instead of “just trying it.” The BACB also publishes pass rates for each 40-hour training provider if you want to compare programs.

What the RBT Exam Looks Like

RBT exam format: 85 questions, 90 minutes, about 63 seconds per question, pass/fail, 7-day retake wait, 8 attempts in 12 months
  • 85 multiple-choice questions: 75 scored and 10 unscored, each with 4 choices and 1 correct answer.
  • 90 minutes, and the clock keeps running if you take a break.
  • Computer-based at Pearson VUE testing centers.
  • Content comes from the 6 domains on the 3rd edition RBT task list.

For a full breakdown of questions per domain, see how many questions are on the RBT exam.

How the RBT Exam Is Scored

  • Pass or fail only. You do not get a percentage you need to beat.
  • No published passing score. The BACB sets the cut score with the modified Angoff method, where experts judge how a minimally qualified RBT would perform.
  • Every question counts the same. Your result is based on overall performance, not on passing each domain separately.
  • Results come fast. You get your pass/fail report at the testing center, and score reports appear in your Pearson VUE account.

Watch out: the 10 unscored questions look exactly like the scored ones, so treat every question as if it counts.

Why Some Candidates Find the RBT Exam Hard

The BACB does not publish reasons people fail, so this section is in our opinion, based on how the exam and the task list are built:

  • Scenario questions, not definitions. Many items describe a session and ask what the RBT should do. Knowing a word is not the same as applying it.
  • Look-alike terms. Pairs like DRA and DRO, or continuous and discontinuous measurement, are easy to mix up under pressure.
  • The clock. 90 minutes for 85 questions is about 63 seconds each (our math). Overthinking a few items can leave you rushing at the end.
  • The biggest domain. Behavior Acquisition has 19 of the 75 scored questions, the most of any domain.
  • Ethics judgment. Ethics questions often have two “nice” answers, and only one follows the RBT Ethics Code.

How Hard Is the RBT Exam by Domain?

Not every domain carries the same weight. The question counts below are official (3rd edition Test Content Outline). The “watch for” column is our opinion of what trips students up.

DomainScored questionsWatch for (our opinion)
A. Data Collection and Graphing13Choosing the right measurement for the behavior
B. Behavior Assessment8Telling functions of behavior apart from short descriptions
C. Behavior Acquisition19Prompting, prompt fading, and reinforcement schedules
D. Behavior Reduction14Matching the intervention to the function
E. Documentation and Reporting10Objective vs. subjective session notes
F. Ethics11Picking the answer that goes through your supervisor

Practice each one with our domain quizzes, like the data collection quiz and the behavior reduction quiz.

What Happens If You Fail the RBT Exam?

Failing is not the end. The RBT Handbook sets these retake rules:

  • Wait at least 7 days before your next attempt.
  • Up to 8 attempts within a 12-month period.
  • Your eligibility lasts 1 year from the date your application was approved.
  • A retake application appears in your BACB account within 48 hours, and no BACB fee is currently required.
  • Pearson VUE charges $45 for each exam appointment.

In our opinion, use the 7-day wait to drill the domains you found hardest instead of rescheduling right away.

How to Pass the RBT Exam on Your First Try

Here is the plan we recommend. It is our approach, built around the official task list:

  1. Learn the map. Read the RBT task list so you know what can be asked.
  2. Study one domain at a time with our free RBT study guide, starting with Behavior Acquisition.
  3. Quiz each domain right after you study it, like the behavior acquisition quiz.
  4. Take a full, timed mock exam with 85 questions in 90 minutes.
  5. Review every mistake and write down why the right answer is right. Then retest.

Exam-Day Tips That Make It Feel Easier

These are our own tips, not BACB rules:

  • Pace with checkpoints. At about 63 seconds per question, aim to be near question 43 by the 45-minute mark (our math).
  • Read the last line first. Know what the question is asking before you read the scenario.
  • Cross out two answers. Usually two choices are clearly wrong, which turns a hard question into a 50/50.
  • Do not leave blanks. The RBT Handbook does not mention any penalty for wrong answers, so an educated guess beats an empty answer.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is the RBT exam hard?

It is passable but not easy. In 2025, 75% of first-time candidates passed and 25% did not, according to BACB data. In our opinion, the hard part is applying concepts to short real-life scenarios under time pressure, not memorizing definitions.

What is the RBT exam pass rate?

The BACB reports a 75% pass rate for first-time candidates and 38% for retake candidates in 2025. In 2024 the rates were 73% and 36%, and in 2023 they were 74% and 41%.

What is the passing score for the RBT exam?

The BACB does not publish a numeric passing score. The exam is pass/fail, the cut score is set with the modified Angoff method, and all 75 scored questions are weighted equally.

How many times can you take the RBT exam?

You can take it up to 8 times within a 12-month period, with at least 7 days between attempts, as long as you are within the 1-year eligibility window that starts when your application is approved.

How long should I study for the RBT exam?

The BACB does not set a study time. In our opinion, you are ready when you can finish a full 85-question practice test within 90 minutes and explain why each wrong answer is wrong, not just when you have read every guide.
